June Inshore Fishing Report

Redfish - Crabs, Cut Mullet/Menhaden, Mudminnows, Spoons, you name it, the reds have been biting it all. The reds are in the flats (we got a nice 32" last week), docks, jetties and tailing in the grass. With the warm water, the fish are active.

Trout - Trout fishing has been good. I have been fishing points and oyster beds at creek mouths with poping corks with live menhaden underneath. Menhaden are thick in the harbor right now, so bring a cast net with you!

Flounder - We have been catching flounder an anything from mehaden to electric chicken jigs. Along with a 4.8 pounder that took first place in a tournament a few weeks ago, yesterday on charter we got a 3 pounder while flyfishing with an electric chicken clouser.

Spanish Mackerel - The Spanish are definitely here in good numbers. I have been fishing for them while the current rips out. Look for the birds diving and some surface action from the fish.

Jacks - I have seen a few jacks on the surface while fishing for Spanish Mackerel, but have not targeted them yet. They are definitely here though. This means that the tarpon are sure to be around as well.

Bonnethead Sharks - Shark fishing is great right now and is full of action. If you want to fight nice fish on light tackle, battling bonnetheads is a blast. Crab or Menhaden with their tail cut off has been working great while fished onthe bottom.

Cobia - I have been landing 2 per trip on my nearshore charters on average. A friend of mine caught some in the harbor during a charter this week.

Bluefish, Ladyfish, Seabass, Gar (on the flats after all the rain) , Toadfish, Stingrays, Whiting, and Croacker have all been picking up on my bottom rigs while trying for larger fish.

Last August I saw one caught right off Shutes Folly Island one early morning while we were Spanish Mackerel Fishing, so I can honestly say it happens. I'd say to defnitely try some chumming, and my best bites so far have been on whole squid (but that's nearshore reefs). I hope that helps!

I caught a 14" cobia off Shutes Folly Island this morning on cut menhaden with a group while shark fishing! It's good to see first hand that there are some juveniles out there in our harbor.
