Hi Everyone:
I thought I might share with you today my double super secret bonefish fly. I am preparing to leave today for the Bahamas for a couple of days of bonefishing and tied up my secret weapon. The main ingredient is a rare hair material. The beast from which it is harvested is growing increasingly rare as each day passes. In fact, this material is only available about every 2 months, and even so, supply continues to steadily decrease. I fear that one day in the very near future, it will not be obtainable by any means. A casual examination of the attached photo may be inadequate for most observers to identify the creature of origin of the hair. Many confuse it, quite understandably with the elegant silver fox, but that is not it. Can you determine exactly what type of hair this is?? [IMG] [/IMG]HINT- It is gathered off a floor... OK- Give up?? It's my own hair, saved when I go to the barber shop. I also make one using my red headed wife's hair called the Red Hot Bahama Mama.. Have a great day, I'll take a few photos down ther, hopefully of some giant bonefish and post when I get back next week... |

Here is a photo of the very first bonefish caught on the Silver Haired Daddy Bonefish Fly. It ate witthout hesitation and gave me a nice fight on the 6 weight. Wish we had boned around McClellanville-- actually I read recently that someone accidenatlly did catch 2 bones off the Surfside pier, positively identified by SCDNR. I guess the odd one loes his way occasionally and ends up way up here.

Nice James. I am extremely envious.
You had me going with that silver hair. I was trying to imagine just what it could be. The farthest from my mind was your own hair. How long a stalk did it take for that beauty? My wife is itching to go on a trip, we are having our 25th today and we had decided earlier this year to put off the trip till spring. Weather looks great there. I wonder if she would guess I picked the Bahama's so I could wet a line? Let's see, what would be in it for her? Steve |

Hi Steve;
Congrats on your 25th anniversary. I am always so pleasd to see couples stay together through thick and thin, just like the vows say. Not many people can say they have accoplished that- I think it is great!!!!! As far as taking the wife to the Bahamas, there are a couple of choices. It depends largely on your budget. There is a VERY upscale lodge on north Andros called Kakalame Cay- access to massive schools of bones in the Joulters area AND a 5 star resort for the MRS- massages, eceotours, hot tubs in the rooms, etc, but big time expensive- last I checked, around $1000-$1500 a night, but very nice. Personally, I would recommend going to Pelican Bay Resort in Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. There are direct flights from Charlotte, very easy to get to. Once there, the resort has all the amenities you would expect and is located adjacent to a market area with shops and a number of restaurants. The Westin Resort is next door, and has a number of pools, jet skis, and all the other tourist type stuff. The fishing is excellent ( I have fished all over the Bahamas for a number of years, and this is top drawer stuff here) Greg Vincent and Jason Franklin run the fishng operations and are both super nice guys and really expert fishermen. They run a superb operation and offer some unique oppportunities- you can bonefish in the morning and then transfer to Greg's offshore boat and fish until dark offshore for dolphin and yellowfin tuna. Ther are of course large numbers of bones, but good numbers of permit as well, especially in the early spring ( first couple of weeks in April). TArpon are available on a more limited basis as well. It is a place I recommend without reservation to take your wife and family. You can contact Greg at gregfish@coralwave.com. The website is www.pelicanbaybonefishing.com. I was down there a couple of weeks ago and hooked 31 bonefish all on fly ( I was using a Temple Fork Outfitters 6 weight) and brought 24 to the boat. I also caught about 8 jacks- spectacular day. Greg has recently replaced most of his guide staff and I am quite happy with his new guys, especially Ishmael (Ish for short). Email Greg and tell Him James Yates sent you. Greg is a world class fisherman and a great guy to boot. He will treat you right every time. I hope it works out for you to go. I know you wil like it, just be absolutely certain that you are ready to double haul and cat 60 feet of line without thinking about beore you leave. Saltwater fishing is a completely different game from trout fishing- your window of opportunity is small and long accurate cast are a must to maximize your hookup rate.. Again, welcome and tight lines.. JAmes Yates [IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG]YFT caught offshore at Pelican Bay on fly after a moring of bonefishing |

Paul:
Thanks for sharing the photo. I don't know about you, but I really enjoyed the trips to PB. Greg and Jason are absolutely super guys and the fishing there is awesome. I am headed to Sandy Point on Abaco in 10 days time to fish for 3 1/2 days at Stanley's. Hope it all works out and we can do some bonesmacking. It is usually excellent fishing and we usually get several shots at permit. Last trip, I hooked 3 tarpon, but of course was unable to bring them to the boat with 12 pound bonefish leaders, but it was SO VERY COOL to see them eat and then give me a nice jump prior to heading to parts unknown. This time I will have some tarpon leaders rigged and ready, which means that I will not see a single one this trip. Nonetheless, the possibility for a grand slam certainly exists. Have a great remaining weekend and see tomorrow... James |

Here are a couple photos from PBB. Note the proximity of the beach in the photo with the dolphin. It was fly rod caught from a flats boat very close to the beach.
The other is a small permit caught by my friend Greg Vincent near Freeport. James ![]()
